How to Increase Life of Lead-Acid Battery?

How to increase the operating life of a battery to meet the required warranty period is a question which many SMEs face. Obviously we need to know the common modes of failure of battery and control them. Although a battery may fail due to many reasons, we shall now consider only the most common modes of failure of batteries. The common failure modes well –known for decades are:-

  1. Corrosion of grids and connectors
  2. Shedding of paste from plates
  3. SULPHATION of plates – particularly on negatives

We need to control all of above to extend life of battery

Positive Grid Corrosion

The conventional procedure is to increase life of the grid is to increase thickness so that it lasts for the required number of years. This presupposes that the corrosion will be uniform. This reasoning is flawed since corrosion is not always uniform. But this is not the case in many cases. Localized corrosion happens due to the poor quality of alloy and casting procedure. This is not a dependable method to increase life of grids.
